Atlanta, Georgia, Dec. 31 – Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler has reached out to the 1.2 million Georgians with disabilities, responding to questions from Sign 1 News earlier this week.
Local disability organizations such as the Georgia Disability Vote Partnership (GDVP) and national groups such as RespectAbility have been reaching out to Democratic and Republican candidates about issues affecting people with disabilities, including employment, education, criminal justice and accessibility.
However, it has only been in the final few hours of the campaign that candidates are starting to respond.
Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) answered questions at a campaign event and recordings of her answers were shown at the Georgia Disability Vote Partnership’s voting forum. Loeffler’s responses are 28 minutes into the video. The forum was produced by Sign1News, featuring all four of Georgia’s Senate runoff candidates, and originally aired in a livestream on Monday evening. The transcript of Loeffler’s comments can be found below:
Why is it so important for the disability community to be involved in the political process?
Incredibly important because the future of the country is on the line here. It’s the direction of the country. We can go down the path of socialism, big government, high taxes, government-run health care, or fighting for the American ideals that lets all Americans live the American dream.
How do you plan to engage the disability community to be more involved and active in the laws, decisions and policies that affect our lives?
Well, I’m a member of the Health Education Labor and Pension committee in the Senate, so health care is incredibly important. But I’m also a businessperson, and I’m someone who believes in creating jobs for all Americans. And we need to make sure that we have opportunities to lift all Georgians up. I’m fighting for more pandemic relief as well. We know that so many small businesses and employees have been hit hard by the pandemic and I’m working to continue to try to deliver relief that the Democrats have been blocking.”
